Migraine Prodrome Warning Signs: The Clues That Can Show Up Before Pain
For many people, migraine starts before head pain. The earliest phase is often called prodrome. It can include changes in energy, mood, appetite, concentration, light sensitivity, or neck tension. None of these signs proves a migraine is coming by itself; they become useful when they repeat in your own history.
Four early changes to notice
- Unusual yawning or fatigue: especially when it does not fit your sleep.
- Neck, shoulder, or jaw tightness: this can be part of the migraine pattern, not necessarily the cause.
- Light or sound feeling sharper: notice when you suddenly reach for sunglasses or lower your screen brightness.
- Food cravings or a change in thirst: record the change without assuming a specific food caused the attack.
Other people notice frequent urination, mood changes, trouble finding words, or difficulty focusing. Log the start time and what happened next. A short entry made in the moment is usually more useful than trying to reconstruct the day later.
What to do with a recurring prodrome pattern
First, follow the plan you have already made with your clinician for early symptoms. Then reduce the extra load you can control: eat something regular if you have missed a meal, lower sensory stimulation, keep fluids nearby, and avoid adding a new stressor if possible.
Do not treat a checklist as a diagnosis. New speech, vision, weakness, numbness, confusion, or a sudden severe headache should be assessed urgently—especially if they are different from your usual symptoms.
Why tracking helps
Claru keeps symptom timing alongside attacks, sleep, weather, cycle context, and medication response. Over time, that turns “I think I get warning signs” into a timeline you can discuss at an appointment.
