N1-Headache Alternatives: 6 Apps Still Updated

A man at a kitchen table at dusk speaking a note into his phone, with a printed multi-page questionnaire pushed aside next to a mug of tea

N1-Headache had a genuinely good idea. Instead of guessing at triggers, it asked you the same detailed questions every day, on headache days and headache-free days, and after 90 days it showed you which factors were linked to your attacks, which seemed to protect you and which had nothing to do with it. The method was published in the journal Cephalalgia in 2016, and it found possible triggers in 87% of the 326 patients studied.

The problem is what happened next. The app's last update on both iOS and Android was version 3.0.2 on January 18, 2023. Curelator, the company behind it, has not published news since 2021. Its Google Play rating has fallen to 2.67, and reviewers mention crashes, a rigid one-question-per-screen questionnaire with no skipping, and no replies from the developer.

If you are still using N1-Headache or thinking about starting, here are six alternatives that are actively updated:

  1. Claru: best for finding patterns without a daily questionnaire
  2. Migraine Insight: closest to N1's trigger-map idea
  3. Migraine Buddy: most detailed attack records
  4. Migräne-App (Schmerzklinik Kiel): best free option in German
  5. mySymptoms: best if food is your main suspect
  6. A paper headache diary: best if you just want to stop using apps

We make Claru and have listed it first, but we explain where the others do better. All facts were checked on October 12, 2026.

What made N1-Headache different, and what to keep

Before you switch, it is worth knowing which part of N1 you actually valued:

  • Logging headache-free days. Most apps only record attacks, which makes it hard to see what was different on good days. Any app you choose should let you log normal days quickly.
  • Many factors tracked consistently. N1 tracked more than 70 factors. You do not need that many, but the ones you suspect should be recorded every day, not only on bad days.
  • Patience. No app can find reliable triggers in two weeks. Expect to need at least a month, ideally three.

What you can leave behind is the effort. If a daily 5-minute questionnaire was the reason you stopped, an app that records weather on its own and lets you log in one sentence will give you more data, simply because you will keep using it.

1. Claru: patterns without the questionnaire

Claru takes the opposite approach to N1's long daily form. You tell it what happened, in your own words if you like, and it does the structuring. Say "Headache started after lunch, left temple, about a five, skipped breakfast and slept six hours" and the AI fills in onset, location, severity, possible triggers and sleep for you to check. You can also log sleep, exercise and custom factors on headache-free days, so the comparison N1 relied on is still there.

Weather is the part of N1 you had to think about yourself. Claru records barometric pressure, air quality and pollen for your location automatically.

After about ten entries you see timing, frequency and severity patterns for free. Claru Pro adds weather correlations, combinations such as "stress plus short sleep", medication effectiveness with time to relief and a weekly written summary. Claru also adds something N1 never had: a free daily risk forecast that tells you when a high-risk day is coming and why.

Where N1 was stronger: its trigger maps were based on a published, peer-reviewed method, and the one-time price was cheap. Claru's insights are not a clinical study. They are a practical summary of your own data.

Choose Claru if you want trigger insights and are realistic about how much logging you will do. Full comparison: Claru vs N1-Headache.

2. Migraine Insight: closest to N1's trigger map

If the trigger map was the whole point for you, Migraine Insight is the nearest equivalent that is still being updated. Its premium trigger finder analyses the timing between suspected triggers and your episodes and needs 8 to 12 weeks of data, which is a similar timescale to N1's 90 days. Weather and pressure are recorded automatically, and logging and doctor reports are free.

Premium is about $9.99 a month according to reviewers, and one 2025 review mentioned older history being locked behind the paywall. English only.

Choose it if you want an automatic trigger analysis and are happy to subscribe.

3. Migraine Buddy: most detailed attack records

Migraine Buddy records more about each attack than any other app here, including prodrome and postdrome, and its doctor report is free. MBplus adds patterns, a Good Days Guide and advanced weather and trigger reports. It is actively developed (version 91 in October 2026) and available in nine languages including German and Spanish.

The trade-off is a long logging flow, which may feel familiar if N1's questionnaire wore you out. See our Migraine Buddy alternatives for the full picture.

4. Migräne-App (Schmerzklinik Kiel): free, in German

N1-Headache was available in English and German, so many of its users are in German-speaking countries. If that includes you, the free Migräne-App from Schmerzklinik Kiel and the Techniker Krankenkasse is worth trying. It has a 4.7 rating from more than 13,000 German reviews, analyses your diary automatically and warns you when acute medication use approaches the limit for medication-overuse headache. Data stays on your phone. It is available only in German.

5. mySymptoms: if food is your main suspect

N1 tracked food as one of many modules. If food is the factor you most want to test, mySymptoms goes much deeper, logging meals and ingredients and ranking "Top Suspects". It costs $9.99 a month or $59.99 a year after a 7-day trial and has no migraine-specific logging. Some reviewers find its analysis window too short for delayed triggers.

6. A paper headache diary

Sometimes the honest answer is that you are tired of apps. A well-designed paper diary, filled in every evening, can give your doctor most of what N1 did. Our printable headache diary is free, and our headache and migraine diary template explains what to write down.

Before you leave N1-Headache

  1. Download your PDF summary and, if you bought them, your trigger and protector maps.
  2. Write down the factors N1 flagged as likely triggers or protectors. These are your starting list.
  3. In your new app, track those factors every day, not only on headache days.
  4. Give it four to twelve weeks before you judge the results.

If you are not sure which factors deserve attention, our guide to migraine trigger stacking explains why triggers often only matter in combination, which is something single-factor maps can miss.

Frequently asked questions

Is N1-Headache still supported?
The app is still listed, but its last update on both iOS and Android was version 3.0.2 on January 18, 2023, and Curelator's latest press release dates from January 2021. Reviewers also report crashes and say the developer has not replied to reviews since 2020.
What is the best alternative to N1-Headache?
If you liked N1-Headache's goal of finding your personal triggers but not the daily questionnaire, Claru is the closest low-effort replacement: you log by voice or tap, weather and pressure are recorded automatically, and Pro shows trigger combinations and medication effectiveness. Migraine Insight's AI trigger finder is the closest in concept to N1's trigger map.
Which app finds migraine triggers like N1-Headache?
Migraine Insight's premium trigger finder analyses timing over 8 to 12 weeks. Claru Pro looks at triggers, combinations such as stress plus poor sleep, weather and medication response. Migraine Buddy's MBplus has trigger and weather reports. None of them copies N1's exact statistical method, which was validated in a 2016 Cephalalgia study.
Is there an N1-Headache alternative in German?
Yes. Claru and Migraine Buddy are both available in German, and the free Migräne-App from Schmerzklinik Kiel is German only.
What happens to my N1-Headache data if I switch?
Download the PDF summary and, if you paid for it, your trigger and protector maps before you stop using the app. Bring them to your doctor and use the triggers it found as a starting list in your new app.
